Man receives severe burns when flash fire erupts
08.31.10
A man working in a utility room at a house in the foothills above Goleta suffered second- and third-degree burns to 80 to 90 percent of his body Monday when a flash fire occurred for unknown reasons.
The man was taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital by ambulance and later flown to the Grossman Burn Center in Los Angeles.
The victim was in very serious condition before he was taken to the Los Angeles burn center, said Santa Barbara County Fire Department Capt. David Sadecki, who noted that the higher the percentage of one’s body that is burned, the lower the chance of survival.
Sadecki said the county Fire Department will not be releasing the man’s name.
Firefighters responded around 9:30 a.m. to a home in the 4000 block of Camino Del Mirasol, Sadecki said. The first fire engine on scene reported a small fire and a burn victim.
The 30-year-old man was removing some flooring in a small utility room adjacent to the home’s garage when the fire ignited.
Firefighters are investigating the cause of the blaze, and the state Division of Occupational Safety and Health was notified.
